A 31-year-old civil servant has been charged in court over an alleged wedding planning scam that drew 73 police reports from couples, with total losses of almost RM1 million, Perak police said.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin told a press conference at the state police headquarters in Ipoh on Friday (Oct 23) that the man was charged on Sept 8, The Star reported.
Wedding planning scam drew 73 reports
Although police received 73 reports linked to the man, prosecutors decided to proceed with a single charge.
“After consulting with the prosecution, it was decided that the man face one charge,” Comm Mohd Alwi said.
The case had earlier drawn attention online after a post on Threads alleged that several couples had lost money they paid for their wedding arrangements. Commenters on the post claimed losses of RM23,000, RM20,000 and RM12,000, with one saying only RM50 had been paid back.
Consumer Tribunal to handle other complaints
Comm Mohd Alwi said the remaining reports were referred to the Consumer Tribunal for further action, because the wedding ceremonies involved had not yet taken place.
Police did not disclose the man’s identity, the court where he was charged, or the specific offence he faces.
Disciplinary action for civil servant
The police chief clarified that the suspect is not a police officer but is employed by the Public Service Department.
The man also faces disciplinary proceedings by his employer, which could include suspension from service.
The case remains before the court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
