Poland Holds Six Suspected of Spying, Supplying Russia’s Military

Poland has detained six people in a Russia spying investigation, four of them arrested on charges of working for Russian intelligence and supplying components for the Russian military, Reuters reported on Thursday (Nov 5), citing a statement from the Internal Security Agency (ABW). The suspects are five Polish citizens aged 25 to 52 and a 37-year-old Russian woman.

According to the ABW, the group illegally supplied Russia with military-grade materials used in the production of ammunition and weapons systems, acting on behalf of Russian special services. Two of the six, accused of taking part in an organised criminal group, were placed under non-custodial preventive measures, Reuters said.

Ukrainian outlet European Pravda reported that a court remanded four of the suspects in custody, while other preventive measures were imposed on the remaining two.

Searches in three regions

European Pravda said the operation ran from Oct 21 to Nov 2, with ABW officers searching 21 locations in the Warmian-Masurian, Pomeranian and Greater Poland voivodeships. It said the investigation is continuing under the supervision of the Podlaskie branch of the prosecutor’s office.

Tomasz Siemoniak, who oversees Poland’s special services, told reporters that Russia was under a strict embargo on such supplies. “This operation was designed to circumvent it,” he said, according to Reuters.

Siemoniak said the ABW suspects around 100 people of involvement in espionage or sabotage since Jan 1, 2024, Reuters reported. The Russian embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the Kremlin denies conducting sabotage in NATO countries, the news agency said.
