WELLINGTON – Beaches along New Zealand’s southern coast reopened on Feb 25 after weeks of closure due to a sewage spill. The incident began on Feb 4 when equipment at Moa Point’s wastewater treatment plant malfunctioned during a storm, releasing raw sewage into the sea near Tarakena Bay. It was a real poo-namy!

For weeks, about 70 million litres of untreated waste flowed daily, prompting health warnings and empty shorelines during peak summer. Wellington Mayor Andrew Little announced the lifting of the ban, allowing residents to return, though authorities cautioned swimmers to enter at their own risk as monitoring continues.
