Powerful 7.1 earthquake shakes parts of Malaysia, no damage reports yet

A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck parts of Malaysia on Sunday, centred roughly 55 km north-northwest of Kota Belud, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor occurred at a depth of about 620 km and was felt across regions, though no tsunami warning was issued.

Despite the high magnitude, authorities and first responders have so far reported no immediate damage or casualties. Local communities in affected northern and eastern areas felt rolling tremors, but infrastructure and buildings remained intact in preliminary reports. 

Experts say deep-focus earthquakes, like this one, spread seismic waves broadly but generally cause less intense surface shaking than shallower quakes — though residents are urged to stay alert for aftershocks.
