Premier League Clubs Now Seek Restrictions on Nation States Owning English Clubs

Leading Premier League clubs have urged the government to prevent nation states from owning English football clubs, potentially becoming part of a new regulator’s mandate. This move follows the takeover of Newcastle United by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, causing concerns about state ownership. 

Premier League clubs now seek restrictions 

The regulator’s key responsibilities will include assessing the suitability of owners and directors, and some stakeholders suggest limiting state ownership in owners’ and directors’ tests (ODTs). 

The regulator will also oversee financial resources, protect fan interests, authorize competitions, and act independently. The Premier League continues to collaborate with the government on the regulator’s setup.
