A 49-year-old air-conditioning technician, known only as Mr Lin, was duped out of S$3,999 after encountering a woman on TikTok claiming to be from Guangdong and held captive in an Amoy Street shophouse. She alleged debt from an investment scam forced her into potential prostitution, crying during calls and promising to be his girlfriend if rescued.

Despite refusing video calls, Lin transferred funds in installments after her “boss” provided the address. When further demands arose for “rent,” he realized the scam and reported it to police. The shophouse turned out to be a restaurant, unaware of the incident. Police confirmed the report.
