Pandan MP and former economy minister Rafizi Ramli has defended his call for higher standards in reform politics, responding to criticism from National Unity Advisory Council member Professor Tajuddin Rasdi. Rafizi reminded that reformasi was never about power alone but about responsibility and integrity. He argued that PKR activists who fought tirelessly for Anwar Ibrahim’s release from prison had endured immense hardship, unlike some critics who now accuse him of being “rude.”
‘Reformist Professor’
“Is it wrong if PKR leaders and activists set higher standards? If we keep compromising just because the government is our party, we risk becoming like UMNO,” Rafizi said, stressing that reform must remain rooted in accountability. His remarks came after Tajuddin described Rafizi’s recent comments on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as his “unkindest” yet, saying Anwar had endured police brutality and imprisonment for decades while continuing to fight. Tajuddin argued that if Anwar had been merely obsessed with power, he would have left the country instead of suffering years behind bars.
The exchange highlights growing tensions within PKR, as Rafizi pushes for reformist ideals while party elders defend Anwar’s legacy. Rafizi insisted that criticism should be contextualised, and reform politics must not lose sight of its founding principles.
