Sabah State Mufti Datuk Bungsu @ Aziz Jaafar supports the recent implementation of six whippings for Shariah law offenders in Terengganu, describing it as consistent with “takzir” principles in Islamic law. He emphasized the punishment serves as a deterrent when carried out publicly under strict conditions, without being recorded or shared widely. Speaking after an event in Putatan, he highlighted that each state’s religious authorities have the right to determine such punishments based on “ijtihad” (independent reasoning), which others cannot overrule. Bungsu noted similar punishments have occurred in Sabah, urging against politicizing the issue or sparking unnecessary debates.
