Why are Sawfish spinning, and dying, in Florida waters now

In an unprecedented move, federal and state wildlife agencies are launching an emergency response to rescue and rehabilitate endangered smalltooth sawfish in Florida waters. The effort comes in response to an alarming spike in sawfish deaths, with at least 28 documented fatalities since late January.

Officials are puzzled by the erratic spinning behavior exhibited by the marine creatures and have yet to pinpoint a cause. Collaborating with organizations like Mote Marine Laboratory, they aim to investigate the mysterious mortality event and prevent further decline of this ancient species. The public is urged to report sightings of distressed sawfish to aid in the rescue efforts.
