SIM Card Mule Scheme Fuels Cybercrime in Malaysia, Says MCCA

Cybercriminals are exploiting online SIM card sales to commit fraud and evade detection, said Malaysia Cyber Consumer Association (MCCA) president Siraj Jalil. Known as the “SIM card mule scheme,” criminals use prepaid SIMs registered under falsified identities, making police investigations difficult and geolocation tracking unreliable.

Weak controls on SIM registration have allowed abuse across platforms, including online games. Siraj warned that cybercrime will become increasingly complex if left unchecked, affecting society at large. He stressed the shared responsibility of government, digital platforms, and game developers to enhance awareness, teach safe digital practices, and ensure user protection, especially for youth.
