A Singaporean content creator has sparked online debate over whether the festive holiday should be u to as Chinese New Year (CNY) or Lunar New Year (LNY). In a TikTok video posted on Feb 21, Caitanya Tan argued that calling it CNY “does not erase” other cultures, noting that LNY is an umbrella term covering celebrations in Vietnam, Korea, and elsewhere.
Which New Year?
She explained that Singapore’s large Chinese population naturally frames the holiday as CNY, while other countries use their own names such as Tết or Seollal. The video, which has garnered over 90,000 views, drew mixed reactions. Some netizens insisted CNY is factual and rooted in tradition, while others felt LNY is more inclusive. The debate reflects broader questions of cultural identity and terminology in Singapore’s diverse society.
