Southeast Asia Is Still Not Fully Cashless Despite Efforts

1 min read

If you are living in Kuala Lumpur, and are often frustrated that you may have to use cash unexpectedly at the most inconvenient of times, you are not alone. Malaysia is still not fully cashless, this is even after efforts from the government in the later half of the 2010s.

When will we be cashless?

It has gotten to the point where it is a recurring joke on Twitter. A netizen stated that being cashless is fun but once you have to start paying for (presumably) outdoor parking, reality suddenly kicks in as most of these places do not accept cashless payments.

Furthermore, places like highway tolls are technically cashless, but you would still have to use the archaic Touch N Go system for payments. However, there are netizens that claim that certain private outdoor parkings are now accepting QR payments.
