The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is reviewing whether additional regulations are needed for online gaming platforms, including Roblox, amid concerns about children’s safety in digital environments. Com`munications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said on October 29 that MCMC and the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF) were studying risks involving interactions between users, in-game content and safeguards provided by gaming companies. The review will also consider international regulatory practices to identify suitable measures for Malaysia.

Gaming Industry Consultation to Shape New Online Safety Measures

CMCF is conducting a public consultation to develop a Gaming SubCode, involving app store operators, local and international game developers, online safety experts, esports representatives, legal practitioners and researchers. Findings from the consultation and MCMC’s study will help determine whether further measures are necessary, with an emphasis on evidence-based and proportionate regulation rather than a blanket approach to online gaming.

Parents Urged to Strengthen Digital Supervision

Fahmi said protecting children requires cooperation between government agencies, technology providers, schools and families. Parents and guardians are being encouraged to activate parental controls on devices and online services. The government’s Safe Internet Campaign will continue raising awareness through community programmes and parent-teacher initiatives, supported by RM58.7 million allocated under Budget 2027. The review signals a stronger focus on safeguarding young users while allowing the online gaming industry to develop responsibly.

MCMC is studying tighter rules for Roblox and other online games as Malaysia strengthens efforts to protect children from digital safety risks.
