Sydney Extends Lockdown As Delta Cluster Grows

1 min read

Sydney has extended its lockdown after detecting 27 new Delta cases on Wednesday, July 7.

The growth of the Delta cluster is worrying but locals are asking for how long can the country remain cut-off from the rest of the world?

The 5 million residents will now spend at least another week in coronavirus lockdown with stay-at-home orders now already in place for two weeks.

But authorities want to curb an outbreak of the highly contagious Delta variant.

“This Delta strain is a game-changer, it’s extremely transmissible,” says New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian.

“We don’t want to be in a position where we constantly must move between lockdown, no lockdown, lockdown, no lockdown.”

Saying the virus must be eradicated from the community, Berejiklian says an extension is the best chance to make this happen.

This policy will be in place until the country has the vast majority of citizens vaccinated.

However, like in other parts of the world, there are growing question whether or not lockdowns are working,.

In Australia, people are worried of the long cut off time from the rest of the world.

The Sydney outbreak has so far seen just 357 cases but authorities are not taking any chances.
