Eighteen Taiwanese nationals have been arrested in Kuala Lumpur over a suspected online scam in which a syndicate allegedly posed as fake Hong Kong police officers to cheat victims in Hong Kong, according to a Bernama report carried by Malay Mail on Saturday (Oct 31).
The suspects, 17 men and one woman aged between 19 and 43, were picked up in a raid on two luxury apartment units in the city at 6.35pm on Thursday (Oct 29).
Fake Hong Kong police syndicate
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Ahmad Azwan Amin Nordin said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 31) that the group is suspected of cheating by impersonating Hong Kong police officers, with victims in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as its targets.
Initial investigations found that the syndicate used local internet access for its activities. Police believe it had been operating for about five months.
Phones, laptops and uniforms seized
During the raid, police seized 69 mobile phones and five laptops, Ahmad Azwan said.
Officers also recovered two sets of Hong Kong police uniforms from the apartment units, according to the statement.
Police have not disclosed how many victims were allegedly cheated or the amount of money involved.
Taiwanese remanded until Nov 2
All 18 suspects have been remanded for four days until Monday (Nov 2) to assist in the investigation, which is being conducted under Section 420/511 of the Penal Code.
Ahmad Azwan urged anyone with information on the case to contact the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters at 03-26002222 or visit any nearby police station.
