Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz has dismissed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s claims about Malaysia’s recent trade deal with the US, calling them false and misleading.

Dr Mahathir alleged the government had removed taxes on 11,000 US products in exchange for minor tariff cuts and had agreed to supply unprocessed rare earth. Tengku Zafrul clarified that only 60.4% of tariff lines were zero-rated—not all—and denied any exclusive rare earth deal.
He urged Dr Mahathir to verify facts and said the agreement aims to protect Malaysian jobs. The US recently reduced tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25% to 19%.
