A carpenter in Terengganu, Mohd Affendi Awang, 42, is set to become the first person in the state to receive public whipping for repeated khalwat (close proximity) offences. The Senior Shariah High Court sentenced him to six lashes, a RM4,000 fine, or six months’ imprisonment for his third offence under the Shariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) (Terengganu) (Amendment) Enactment 2022. Scheduled for December 6, the punishment will take place at Masjid Al-Muktafi Billah Shah. Judge Kamalruazmi Ismail stated the sentence aims to educate and deter others. Previously convicted twice for similar offences, Affendi was caught with a 52-year-old woman in June.
