Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn endorsed a royal decree on 12 December to dissolve parliament, paving the way for a snap general election to be held within 45–60 days. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the country’s third leader since August 2023, announced the dissolution late Wednesday, declaring he was “returning power to the people.”

The move follows irreconcilable differences with the opposition People’s Party, the largest bloc in parliament. Political instability continues to weigh on Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, already strained by U.S. tariffs, record household debt, and sluggish consumption.
