Donald Trump’s administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to urgently review its sweeping tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), after a federal appeals court ruled the president had exceeded his authority.

The Justice Department is seeking a decision by Sept. 10 and oral arguments in November, with Solicitor General D. John Sauer warned the stakes are “extraordinarily high” for U.S. trade and security. 

While small businesses argue the tariffs are unlawful and damaging, Trump has defended them as essential to economic prosperity and national security. The case could reshape presidential power over trade policy.
