SINGAPORE, Jan 24 — Tragedy struck when the Singapore-registered bulk carrier Devon Bay sank in the South China Sea on Jan 21 around 10pm, en route from the Philippines to China with iron ore cargo. Two Filipino seafarers were found dead, four remain missing, while 15 were rescued amid ongoing search efforts. The vessel, carrying 21 Filipino crew, capsized near Scarborough Shoal within the Philippine EEZ. No Singaporeans were aboard.
Singapore Flagged-Ship
The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) is investigating as the flag state and supporting the ship owner. China’s Coast Guard, alerted at 1:34am Jan 23, deployed vessels and aircraft, saving 10 initially; 14 are stable, one in treatment. The Philippine Coast Guard sent two ships and aircraft, emphasizing UNCLOS obligations for humanitarian aid. Joint operations continue in the disputed waters, highlighting regional cooperation despite tensions.
