LONDON, 19 December 2025 – Britain braces for its busiest Christmas getaway ever, with 24.4 million cars predicted on roads today (Friday), according to the AA. Congestion will likely peak around retail hotspots and motorways like M8 Edinburgh-Glasgow, M60 Trafford Centre, and M25 near Heathrow and Bluewater.
Christmas Traffic Chaos
TomTom warns of “severe” Saturday traffic for last-minute shopping, with Edinburgh again topping congestion lists. The RAC forecasts 37.5 million leisure car trips by Christmas Eve – a record since 2013.
National Highways will remove over 90% of roadworks until January 2. Airports also anticipate historic volumes, with over five million UK travellers heading abroad for winter sun and Christmas markets.
