UK: Heatwaves creep into people’s homes and kill them

1 min read

A professor in the UK says, “Heat really is a silent killer.

“Heatwaves almost literally creep into people’s homes and kill them.”

After it’s been hit again by the Coronavirus, the UK is bracing for a deadly heatwave that could spark more deaths.

On Sunday temperatures reached 31.6C (88.9F) at Heathrow and 30.2C (86.4F) in Cardiff making it the hottest day of the year

More than 2,500 fatalities were linked to heatwaves last summer, with 1,700 in August alone. Authorities believe this year will also be devastating.

A scientist believes it is already happening with many dying across the UK and Wales.

The heatwave hits the elderly or those who have underlying respiratory illnesses. It is also bad for those living in houses and care homes that are prone to overheating.

The amber level 3 heat health warning – one tier below a level 4 national emergency – was extended to Friday.
