The Trump administration has announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, raising total duties to 50%, over India’s continued imports of Russian oil. The move, effective August 27, follows President Trump’s executive order citing Russia as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” and singling out India.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the decision as “unfair” and vowed to defend national interests. India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, bought 1.75 million barrels per day from Russia in early 2025, benefiting from discounted rates. The tariffs risk straining US-India ties, already complicated by trade imbalances and past disputes over import duties.
