The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the decision as “unfair” and vowed to defend national interests. India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, bought 1.75 million barrels per day from Russia in early 2025, benefiting from discounted rates. The tariffs risk straining US-India ties, already complicated by trade imbalances and past disputes over import duties.
