Several Chinese-owned solar panel manufacturers in Malaysia have shut down or reduced operations due to US tariff hikes, according to Singapore’s Straits Times. Affected companies include Jinko Solar Co, Risen Energy Co, and JA Solar Technology Co, which account for nearly 40% of Malaysia’s solar production capacity.
US Tariff Hikes Force Chinese Solar Firms in Malaysia to Scale Down
These firms initially invested in Malaysia to target the US market, but higher tariffs and scrutiny have made their products less competitive. Risen Energy Co has scaled down production, while Longi Green Energy Technology Co halted expansion plans. Most of Malaysia’s solar panels are exported to the US, valued at nearly US$1.8 billion.
