Wan Saiful Wan Jan (PN-Tasek Gelugor) has urged Putrajaya to consider closing pig farms in Malaysia, as the government reviews the industry’s entire value chain.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat during the Budget 2027 debate, the Wawasan Negara vice-president cautioned against turning the matter into a racial or religious issue. He said the focus should be pollution, the welfare of the majority and the industry’s suitability for the country.
Wan Saiful Disputes Deputy Minister’s Claim That Parit Cina Pollution Is Under Control
He argued that large-scale farms may not be necessary, as pork can be imported, as Singapore does, possibly at lower prices.
He disputed Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Chan Foong Hin’s statement that monitoring found conditions at Parit Cina under control since farms began sending waste to biogas plants.
Wan Saiful said he lives near the farms and can smell the stench when he opens his door, and that residents see the river turn black. He claimed a residents’ action committee ran its own tests in September and October, both showing continued water pollution.
He cited Selangor’s phased end to pig farming in Tanjung Sepat as a model, and urged liberalised pork imports. Farmers, he stressed, must get a fair transition plan, clear timeline, land assessment, financial aid and retraining.
