Former minister P Waytha Moorthy has filed a High Court suit seeking to nullify Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s election as Tambun MP in November 2022 and his subsequent appointment as premier. He argues Anwar’s 2018 royal pardon did not expressly waive the five-year disqualification under Article 48(3) of the Federal Constitution, rendering him ineligible to contest. Waytha contends Anwar misrepresented his qualification to stand for election while still within the disqualification period. Citing public interest, the Malaysian Advancement Party president says the case is to uphold the rule of law and protect parliamentary integrity. Anwar has yet to respond.
