PM Anwar Ibrahim says the UEC controversy should end now since BM and history are now compulsory. But Professor James China says: “No, the UEC controversy won’t end.” His argument is that. “Right-wing Malay groups oppose it mainly because the UEC uses Mandarin as the main teaching language and it serves mostly the Chinese community. They will still argue UEC is threatening the status of Bahasa Melayu as the national language and national unity.”

He also says forcing history adoption will make things worse because the textbooks push a political ‘indoctrination by heavily promoting the idea of a “social contract” that locks in divisions between bumi and non-bumi.” Which he believes creates two permanent classes of citizens. One has state privileges while the other feels politically inferior. What say you?
