Kuala Lumpur: China has pledged support for the Taliban in Afghanistan provided the militant group cuts ties with the East Turkestan Islamic Movement.
China’s foreign minister Wang Yi says the Taliban’s role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan is to be recognised.
The East Turkestan Islamic Movement is blamed by Beijing for attacks in its Xinjiang region.
Wang Yi made the remarks during talks with a nine-member delegation led by the Taliban’s chief negotiator and co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.
The meeting was held in the northern city of Tianjin, China on Wednesday marking the first time a Taliban rep went to China for such talks.
