Kuala Lumpur: What is the problem between Umno and Bersatu that makes it difficult for observers to get a grip on politics in Malaysia?
An article in South China Morning Post is setting the record straight. It lists down the various issues that have literally killed cooperation between Umno and Bersatu.
On top of the list is the fact that Umno had to surrender the Prime Minister’s post to a minority party. This has never been done by the Umno before.
PM TS Muhyiddin Yassin’s reluctance to come to the rescue of Umno leaders in the “court cluster” is another stumbling block.
The article says Umno is suffering from a syndromic issue, that of not breathing well as the ‘second’ fiddle in the government. That is the party does not have power that rests in Bersatu’s hands.
Hence, Umno is pressing for early elections in a bid to overtake Bersatu and win power.
Umno is not comfortable in the PN coalition. Pushing its political agenda within the BN where it has absolute power makes more sense. In the PN, Bersatu is the leading party and the PAS is a strong ally with the Bersatu. This leaves Umno as a third wheel.
