Umno remains the master of the local political game. After losing the 2018 elections, they were in shock and in disbelief but they quickly recovered, winning several by-elections in shock defeats handed to the Pakatan Harapan and then PM Tun Mahathir Mohamad.
Though Mahathir did make it easier for the Umno and its allies in the PAS to recover from their defeat at his hands, the fact remains Umno played superbly well during its crisis with PM TS Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin managed to out-manoeuvre them on many occasions, but there is always one occasion where he would be caught in his own game and that came when a dozen of Umno MPs officially declared they pulled out support for his leadership.
In one stroke, Umno regained the PM post, is now back in control of Putrajaya and has turned the Bersatu into the small ‘brother’ that it was always despite Muhyiddin being the PM for 17 months. Umno also played the opposition camp, dividing them in the process, though Anwar has managed to keep them together.
