Henry Kissinger, former American Foreign Secretary says the US had no definite plans on how to turn Afghanistan into a modern state while the fragmented society could not prevent ‘terror’ organisations from setting base in the country.
The US entered Afghanistan with huge public support in response to the al-Qaeda attack on America allegedly launched from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan leading to a military campaign but the US failed to realise the Taliban did not disappear.
Losing strategic focus, he says, “we convinced ourselves that the re-establishment of terrorist bases could only be prevented by transforming Afghanistan into a modern state” but America must recognise that no dramatic strategic move is available in the immediate future to offset this self-inflicted setback.
