September was the deadliest month for COVID-19 in Malaysia with a record 9,671 deaths registered or more than a third of the 26,335 total Covid-19 deaths reported in the country so far.

This is the deadliest month since the pandemic began, government data showed on Friday (Oct 1). However, authorities say the increase was mostly due to backlog leading to delayed inclusion of fatalities from previous months.

Reuters say the spike has pushed Malaysia’s death toll to among the highest per capita in Asia. However, the number of infections is showing signs of slowing down.
