Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad says it is a waste of resources to build the line as it only covers a relatively short distance and since Malaysians like to drive, they will not benefit from the high-speed rail.
On the other hand, since Malaysia paid RM320 million to Singapore as compensation, this has already set Malaysia back and restarting it will mean more wasted money.
HSR may not actually be needed in Malaysia as it covers a span of 200km only and if it is to be a popular line, it has to cover longer distances such as Singapore-Penang or Thailand, says Mahathir who adds this is an expensive train.
