Indonesia to strengthen presence in a shoal near Malaysia, Singapore

1 min read

Next month, Indonesia will construct a lighthouse on Karang Singa in Riau Islands province, the latest attempt by the government to reinforce Indonesian sovereignty over territory along the maritime boundary with Singapore and Malaysia.

Home Minister Tito Karnavian, Deputy Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Muhammad Herindra, Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) chief Vice Adm. Aan Kurnia, and Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad revealed the proposal during a recent visit.

Tito, speaking after touring the area, emphasised the strategic importance of Karang Singa, also known as Carter Rif, due to its closeness to neighbouring nations’ territorial seas.
