Tunku Azizah Hospital made Malaysia’s first history when it succeeded in surgery to separate a pair of conjoined or Siamese twins, with the operations including the separation of the liver and intestines.
The premature twins were born at 33 weeks of pregnancy at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Ipoh. Dr. Zakaria, who led the operation, was accompanied by six pediatric surgeons from all over Malaysia, a pediatric anesthesia team led by Dr Intan Zarina and Dr Ruwaida and a total of 20 nurses and pediatric operating room staff.
The twins were successfully separated in 66 minutes without major complications. The conjoined twins of the ‘Omphalophagus’ type were found to share a part of the liver and other organs were found to be normal.
