“Today’s verdict is a victory for not only the rule of law but also for the people of Malaysia,” Breon Peace, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement after a court in USA found Roger Ng, a banker formerly with Goldman Sachs guilty of corruption charges in the 1MDB scandal saga.
The allegations arose from one of history’s largest financial scandals. Prosecutors charged Ng with conspiring to violate an anti-corruption statute and launder money.
Ng, 49, had entered a not guilty plea to the allegations. His attorneys claim that ex-Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner, who pled guilty to identical offences in 2018 and promised to help with the prosecutors’ investigation, falsely accused Ng in order to receive a lighter sentence. But the jury did not buy that.
