Recently, there was a foreign man refusing to wear a face mask while being out in public at Village Grocer, M City Ampang. Netizens went on an uproar against this individual as the government’s mandate for facemasks is for our own safety against Covid-19.
Netizens mentioned on Twitter saying that individuals of European origins think they can do whatever they want in our country. Furthermore they are saying that we are no longer colonized by Europeans, hence it would be better if they were to respect our laws.
This is not the first incident of this happening, last year a British woman refused to wear a mask before entering a Dior boutique in KLCC. That too caused an uproar among netizens at the time. Social media users called her a ‘Karen’ which is a derogatory term for women with European origins when they refuse to follow the rules or when they cause an unnecessary scene.
