After people speculated that the squared-off structure might have been crafted by alien species, scientists explained that a photograph taken by NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars that resembles a ‘doorway‘ cut into the side of a cliff is actually just boring old erosion.
What appears to be a rectangular hole cut into the side of a cliff photographed by the rover last week was actually formed by “normal geological processes,” according to Professor Sanjeev Gupta of Imperial College, who pointed to a rock fracture that could have occurred at any point in the last few hundred million years.
Planetary geologist Nicholas Mangold estimated the alcove’s height to be less than three feet, while Snopes experts claimed it was even smaller, measuring around 30cm by 45cm.
