Today, the High Court denied Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s request to have Queen’s Counsel Jonathan James Laidlaw defend him in the last-ditch effort to overturn his conviction for stealing RM42 million from SRC International.
While it is undeniable that Laidlaw is regarded as a “star silk” in financial crimes, High Court Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid argued that this alone does not imply that the latter has unique skills, expertise, qualifications, or knowledge regarding the application of criminal laws in Malaysia.
He says these are more pertinent to Najib’s appeal before the Federal Court on August 15. Ahmad Kamal stated that he believes local attorneys and solicitors are more than qualified to handle these issues at all levels of the court. Kantoi Najib?
