Malaysia’s Parliament has voted a bill that bans party hopping, popularly called ‘frog‘ jumping or Katak in the country due to the number of MPs who leave their parties for other political organisations in Parliament.

This has caused major disruptions in the country’s democratic fabric and is responsible for the fall of the Pakatan Harapan regime in 2020. With 209 votes in favour, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun says, the bill got more support than the required two-thirds majority to modify the constitution.

There are 220 MPs in Malaysia’s lower house. The bill was passed after the third reading with de facto law minister Junaidi Wan Tuanku Jaafar proposing the motion to pass the bill.
