On the rivers of South Kalimantan province, thousands of toilets on stilts have been built. The direct deposit of waste into waterways has a negative impact on the ecosystem in Indonesia’s Kalimantan.

This happens in the Paku Alam village which lies on the tributary of Martapura river, in BANJAR, South Kalimantan where residents have to look left and right to see if there’s anyone around before they do their dirty business.

They even built a small, wooden walkway which leads to a 1.5 sqm latrine made of hardwood, also built on stilts where a piece of cloth is used as a substitute for a door to allow for privacy when they have to use the latrine. Their waste is deposited directly into the river! Dammit…we are in 2022?
