Coal-Calling: Indian Green Transition Won’t Take Root

1 min read

The fuel will play a critical role until at least 2040, the country’s Coal Minister has said, despite richer Western countries urging the world to wean itself off it but with the energy crisis hitting the country, the Indian green transition is not happening.

Heatwaves are driving demand for air conditioning, and with coal now making up around 73% of power generation, “no transition away from coal is happening in the foreseeable future in India,” according to Pralhad Joshi.

Britain, along with other COP 27 countries and the UN, has called for the fossil fuel to be phased out by 2040, but the worst Indian power crisis in more than six years has disrupted industrial activity across the country.
