Indonesia is expected to ratify sweeping changes to its criminal code on Tuesday (Dec 6) with laws that would punish sex outside of marriage with up to a year in prison, outlaw cohabitation between unmarried couples, insulting the president, and expressing views contrary to the Pancasila, or national ideology.
Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, and Bambang Wuryanto, head of the parliamentary commission overseeing the revision, told Reuters on Monday that the new code would be ratified in a plenary session on Tuesday.
Revised articles on sex outside marriage and cohabitation, for example, now state that such complaints can only be made by close relatives like a spouse, parent, or child, whereas insulting the president can only be made by the president.
