Melaka Urged To Ban Immodest Clothing On Beaches

The Melaka Islamic Religious Affairs Department plans to propose an enactment to prohibit immodest clothing in Pulau Besar, reports Buletin TV3. This follows a viral video of several tourists wearing bikinis while on the island.

But Che shukri of the Melaka Islamic Religious Affairs Department says action cannot be taken against the tourists in the video as Section 71 of the Syariah Offences Enactment (Melaka State) 1991 only applies to Muslims. He adds they also plan on putting up signboards reminding tourists to dress modestly.

Immodest Clothing ban

For that to stop, he says the department is mooting plans to change the ruling. “The meeting will discuss what is the best action that can be taken against foreign tourists who damage the image and sanctity of this Pulau Besar which has been respected with the historical values ​​of the beginning of Islamic civilization,” adds the JAIM chief.
