Tips for parents to improve their child’s bone health

Physical activity

Encourage your child to get regular physical activity: Weight-bearing exercises, such as running, jumping, and lifting weights, can help strengthen bones. Encourage your child to participate in activities that involve these types of exercises.

Make sure your child is getting enough calcium: Calcium is essential for healthy bones. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, as well as leafy green vegetables, almonds, and tofu.

Encourage your child to get enough vitamin D: Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Children can get vitamin D from exposure to sunlight and from foods such as eggs, fatty fish, and fortified milk.

Limit sugary drinks: Sugary drinks, such as soda and fruit juices, can reduce bone density. Encourage your child to drink water and milk instead.

Don’t let your child smoke: Smoking can weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures.

Make sure your child is getting enough sleep: Getting enough sleep is important for overall health, including bone health. Encourage your child to get at least 9-11 hours of sleep per night.
