Many are complaining that due to Malaysia’s weaker Ringgit, items that are counted as ordinary or mid-range in developed countries are seen as a luxury here. Case in point, Starbucks. Malaysians tend to see the coffee brand as a luxurious one, when in reality it is just a glorified “mamak” restaurant for Europeans and Americans.
Starbucks woes
A famous Twitter user stated that in London, a cup of Starbucks coffee is only £3, while in Malaysia it can cost around RM20. Workers in the UK earn about £4,000 and in Malaysia, many are still earning below RM2,000.
Granted, taxes may be lower here, and there are other cheaper alternatives, but at the end of the day the quality of life is still much lower in Malaysia. However, there are netizens stating that the cost of living in the UK is much higher than it is in Malaysia.
Now especially with the war against Russia, which restricts the energy supply to the UK has helped the prices for essentials to rise even further.
