The song “Gong Xi Gong Xi” has become a staple of Chinese New Year celebrations, but its origins are not as festive as one might think as it has a wartime link.

The song was actually written in 1945 by Chinese songwriter Chen Gexin, under the pen name of Qing Yu and Lin Mei, to celebrate the end of World War II in China and mark the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War.
Chen was jailed by the Imperial Japanese Army during the war for his patriotic songs. Despite its ominous minor key, the song’s title, a standard Chinese New Year greeting, and its association with the arrival of spring helped it become a part of Chinese New Year celebrations.
