Malaysia’s Pedestrian Woes

1 min read

Complaints of Malaysian public transportation systems not being used well is quite a common topic among netizens. However, there is a big reason why. It is a hassle for the general public to actually use our public transportation system. There is little to no pedestrian accessibility, are people expected to walk on roads?

Pedestrian accessibility

This netizen captured on video near Surian MRT on how bad it is to access the station. This is common throughout most of the suburban area in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Are people expected to magically pop up at the train station? A lot of netizens said that if they are expected to drive and look for parking, they might as well drive straight to their destination.

Being a car centric country has its benefits, where people are free to drive wherever they want, but at what cost? A netizen said the area looks like a “dystopian” future. Others suggested that a stricter set of rules in maintaining and building infrastructure needs to be in place.

There were also complaints on motorcycles using or parking on the sidewalks that are obviously made for pedestrians. To be fair to these cyclists, there aren’t enough parking spaces for them either. We need proper planning and solid maintenance for our infrastructure, or else the current problems we are facing will drag on for decades.
