Kelantan and Terengganu, two Malaysian states, have been receiving little royalties from the oil found in the sea near their coasts. A 2012 law stated that they should receive royalties if the petrol is found within 3 nautical miles from the land.
Netizens have been questioning why the current political parties in power, PAS and Perikatan Nasional, have not done anything to remove this law in their 33 months of being in charge.

While some netizens have defended the government’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, others have criticised the potential misuse of the royalties by politicians and their lack of concern for the people’s welfare. In particular, a Twitter user argued that the politicians would use the money for their own benefit, while the people would continue to suffer from unsanitary water in the undeveloped parts of the state.
Moreover, netizens are now blaming the incompetence of the PAS politicians for not defending the rights of the people living on the East Coast, and are urging the electoral board to take action against them.
The issue of royalties from natural resources remains a contentious topic in Malaysia, with some advocating for a fair distribution of wealth and others raising concerns about the potential misuse of funds.
