Zheng Linghua, a 24-year-old from Hangzhou, China, battled depression and committed suicide on Jan. 23, after facing criticism for dyeing her hair pastel pink. She had recently been accepted to a graduate music education program at East China Normal University and was one step closer to becoming a piano teacher. Zheng’s mother died when she was six months old, and her grandfather was her sole guardian. She had shared her acceptance letter with her grandfather while he was hospitalized for nine months in 2022.
Heartbreaking
It was heartbreaking when the news came that she committed suicide after intense online harassment from pitiless netizens who compared her to an ‘escort’ for her new pink hair or a “nightclub girl” and an “evil spirit”. They questioned her professional ability, indicating that a teacher with “bizarre” hair colour would not be able to carry out her responsibilities, attacking her grandfather too, saying they look like an old man with a young wife.
